As jazz is akin to learning a language, we need to look beyond theories and rules. We need to imitate those who “speak” fluently. Transcribing solos by the giants of jazz is an excellent way to fill this role, especially in an era where the apprenticeship role of the bandstand has all but disappeared.
Transcription is a key part of my daily practice, which I memorize and write down for reference. They are archived here for anyone who might find them useful.
Each page has pdfs of the transcriptions as well as history and analysis. Enjoy!
